Abstract

This chapter delves into the profound influence of storytelling and narrative persuasion in the realm of countering violent extremism (CVE) and preventing radicalization. It begins with a captivating real-world example of how a comedy show, Слуга народу [Servant of the People], inadvertently shaped the political landscape of Ukraine, illustrating the power of narratives to alter perceptions and behaviors. The text then explores the foundational role of storytelling in human cognition and communication, highlighting how narratives permeate various aspects of life, from entertainment to politics. It discusses the historical and contemporary use of narratives by leaders and extremists to advance their agendas, emphasizing the recognized power of stories to influence audiences. The chapter provides a comprehensive review of narrative persuasion research, detailing the mechanisms through which stories elicit emotional engagement, reduce reactance, and facilitate persuasion. It examines key components of effective storytelling, including plot structure, emotional flow, and the creation of believable storyworlds. The text also delves into the role of audience characteristics, such as personality traits and consumption situations, in shaping narrative reception and persuasion. Furthermore, it explores the importance of messengers and mediums in narrative campaigns, discussing how different storytelling formats and platforms can enhance the persuasive impact of narratives. The chapter concludes by highlighting the practical applications of narrative persuasion in CVE efforts, offering insights into how well-crafted stories can counter extremist ideologies and promote positive social change.
