Transition Towards Energy Efficient Machine Tools

About this book

Energy efficiency represents a cost-effective and immediate strategy of a sustainable development. Due to substantial environmental and economic implications, a strong emphasis is put on the electrical energy requirements of machine tools for metalworking processes. The improvement of energy efficiency is however confronted with diverse barriers, which sustain an energy efficiency gap of unexploited potential. The deficiencies lie in the lack of information about the actual energy requirements of machine tools, a minimum energy reference to quantify improvement potential and the possible actions to improve the energy demand. Therefore, a comprehensive concept for energy performance management of machine tools is developed which guides the transition towards energy efficient machine tools. It is structured in four innovative concept modules, which are embedded into step-by-step workflow models. The capability of the performance management concept is demonstrated in an automotive manufacturing environment. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and practitioners challenged to enhance energy efficiency in manufacturing. The book may also be beneficial for graduate students who want to specialize in this field.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
Economic growth is bound to the consumption of energy (Berndt 1983; Metz et al. 2007). In the last three decades, each 1 % increase in global gross domestic product (GDP) was on average associated with a rise of 0.7 % in primary energy demand (International Energy Agency 2009). Forecasts of the U.S. Energy Information Administration anticipate the continuation of this trend with marginally decreasing intensity. In 2035, the primary energy demand is expected to rise by 0.56 % per marginal growth in GDP resulting in a total demand of 738.7 quadrillion Btu (U.S. Energy Information Administration 2010).

Chapter 2. Energy Demand of Machine Tools and Performance Management
Abstract
This chapter introduces the thematic context as a basis for the elaboration of the research. First, the ecological implications of industrial growth in the economic system are presented, triggering the initiation of the concept of sustainable development. An analysis of energy flows in production systems is then given to identify the origins of energy demand and extended in detail for machine tools. Based on an assessment of energy improvement measures for machine tools according to the availability and barriers, the implications of imperfect information on improving the energy demand are reflected. As a method for promoting efficiency, performance management is introduced and analysed in terms of the feasibility to determine minimum energy requirements and to guide improvement.

Chapter 3. Review on the State of the Research in Improving Energy Performance of Machine Tools
Abstract
This chapter provides a review on the state of the research illustrating the status of current research approaches on improving the energy performance of machine tools. It begins with a short description of relevant approaches classified according to their specific focus within the process of energy performance management. An analysis of the approaches is then conducted evaluating the objectives and constraints in order to obtain a comparative overview about the state of research. In view of the evaluation of approaches, the further need for research is deduced to bridge the energy efficiency gap of machine tools.

Chapter 4. Performance Management Concept to Evaluate and Improve the Energy Efficiency of Machine Tools
Abstract
With regard to the ensuing need for research, this chapter introduces a comprehensive concept adapting performance management to evaluate and improve the energy efficiency of machine tools. First, the objective and functional requirements of the concept are presented, before an overview about the general concept layout and its structural elements is provided. Each element is then specified in detail illustrating the integrated methodologies and tools to determine an ideal energy performance, observe the actual performance and derive improvement. To guide and support the operation of the concept, the developed elements are coupled in workflow models formalising the processes to evaluate and improve the energy efficiency of machine tools.

Chapter 5. Towards Implementation
Abstract
This chapter describes the exemplary concept implementation of the energy performance management for machine tools in an industrial case study. First, a concise overview about the initial situation and industry context is given, before the evaluation and improvement in energy efficiency of machine tools is reflected from a user perspective in two applications. These concentrate on the procurement of new machine tools and the improvement of existing systems.

Chapter 6. Summary and Outlook
Abstract
This final chapter provides a summary on the developed concept of energy performance management for machine tools and concludes the resulting findings of the present research. It includes an examination on the innovative character of the introduced approach and delineates particular restrictions to be considered for the application of the concept. This chapter concludes finally potential consecutive research extending the scope of this work.
