Abstract

This chapter delves into the tribological performance and cytocompatibility of medical-grade cobalt-chromium (Co–Cr) alloys enhanced through Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). It highlights the selection of optimal EDM parameters from earlier stages to improve the mechanical properties and biological compatibility of the alloys. The study employs an MTT assay to assess cytocompatibility and a pin-on-disk tribometer to evaluate wear resistance and friction. Key findings include the superior performance of Sample 2, which exhibited the highest cell viability and the lowest wear rate, attributed to the formation of surface oxides and carbides. The chapter also discusses the surface morphology and microhardness of the samples, providing a comprehensive understanding of how EDM treatments can optimize Co–Cr alloys for medical applications. The results are compared with previous studies, emphasizing the potential of EDM-treated Co–Cr alloys in biomedical fields.
