Abstract

The study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of β-NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ microcrystals, with a particular emphasis on the excitation-power dependent upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties. The authors demonstrate that the UCL color can be tuned from dark red to pure red by varying the excitation intensity, with the red UCL intensity increasing more rapidly than the green UCL. They also report the discovery of a new UCL transition at 580 nm, which has not been previously observed in Ho3+ ions. The energy level diagrams and UCL spectra provide a comprehensive understanding of the energy transfer and population processes involved in the upconversion mechanism. The findings have significant implications for the development of efficient and stable UCL materials in various applications, including medical examination techniques and temperature sensing.
