Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate world of turbulent flow patterns in open channels, focusing on the impact of varying bed roughness heights. Through a combination of experimental studies and advanced CFD simulations, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of how different roughness heights influence velocity profiles, turbulence intensity, and flow resistance. The study was conducted in a laboratory flume with controlled conditions, using sand of varying densities and heights to simulate artificial roughness. Key findings include the observation that increased roughness height correlates with a decrease in maximum velocity and an increase in turbulence intensity. The research also highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics for applications in hydraulic engineering, environmental modeling, and river management. The comparison of experimental data with CFD results validates the accuracy of the numerical model, offering reliable predictions for flow behavior under different roughness conditions. This study not only advances our understanding of turbulent flow over rough surfaces but also provides practical insights for designing and managing hydraulic structures.
