Abstract

The article introduces a novel two-level data aggregation scheme for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to address the critical issue of energy efficiency. WSNs face challenges due to their dynamic topology and limited energy resources. The proposed method incorporates a gateway node alongside cluster heads to minimize data redundancy and transmission, thereby conserving energy. By aggregating data at two levels, the scheme reduces the number of transmissions to a single long-range transmission to the sink, significantly enhancing the network’s lifetime. The article provides a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed scheme, comparing it with existing protocols like LEACH. The results demonstrate that the two-level aggregation approach outperforms LEACH in terms of energy dissipation, data packet transmission, stability period, and overall network lifetime. The article concludes by highlighting the potential for extending the proposed method to heterogeneous networks and considering additional performance parameters in future research.
