Abstract

This chapter examines the uncertainties in estimating chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations from OLCI satellite data over the Sea of Japan in April 2023, focusing on the impact of atmospheric dust. The study highlights the challenges posed by mineral dust from the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts, which complicates satellite measurements of ocean color characteristics. Key topics include the assessment of dust's effect on Chl-a estimation errors, the use of advanced tools like the SILAM model and OLCI satellite data, and the analysis of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) values. The results reveal significant errors in Chl-a calculations due to underestimated and negative Rrs values, leading to abnormally high Chl-a concentrations. The study concludes that these errors are a consequence of atmospheric correction inaccuracies, emphasizing the need for further analysis and improved correction methods.
