Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricacies of experimental uncertainties in cyclic liquefaction potential tests on unsaturated soils, highlighting the critical role of both random and systematic errors in data analysis. It begins by defining uncertainties and their types, emphasizing the often-overlooked importance of considering these errors in single-sample tests. The focus then shifts to the dynamic triaxial tests used to simulate real soil conditions and understand liquefaction in partially saturated soils. Hostun RF sand is used as the testing material, with detailed descriptions of the sample preparation, testing procedures, and the various instruments employed, such as the dynamic triaxial apparatus, load transducers, and automatic pressure controllers. The chapter meticulously explains the calculation of experimental uncertainties at each step of the test, from sample preparation to final removal, and discusses the relative importance of human error versus systematic errors. The results and discussions provide insights into the high precision of the tools used and the significance of considering uncertainties in future modeling efforts. Despite the sample not liquefying, the study underscores the importance of understanding these uncertainties for more accurate and reliable test outcomes.
