Uncertainty Analysis of a Composite Plate Using Anti-optimization and PCE

Abstract

The chapter delves into the uncertainty analysis of a composite plate using Anti-optimization, Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE), and Monte Carlo methods. It begins by introducing the importance of composite materials in engineering due to their superior mechanical properties. However, uncertainties in load, fiber angle, and material properties can significantly impact structural behavior, making uncertainty propagation analysis crucial. The chapter compares the classical Monte Carlo approach with the more efficient Anti-optimization and PCE techniques. The Anti-optimization method, while computationally intensive, provides precise results, whereas PCE offers a quick solution with fewer function evaluations. The study simulates a composite plate using the Newmark algorithm and finite element method, generating envelopes for different uncertainty scenarios. The results show that while PCE is powerful for simpler problems, Anti-optimization excels in more complex scenarios, ensuring safety and reliability. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of choosing the right method based on the complexity of the problem and the desired level of accuracy.
