Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate world of piezoelectric metamaterials, highlighting their potential in applications such as vibration suppression, energy harvesting, and wavefront modulation. It focuses on the design and implementation of piezoelectric waveguides, which utilize the piezoelectric effect to create smart sensors and actuators, enabling novel control schemes with minimal geometric alterations. The study examines the sensitivity of these waveguides to parametric uncertainties, which can significantly affect their performance. Through a meticulous four-stage methodology—design, implementation, uncertainty quantification, and sensitivity analysis—the chapter provides a detailed assessment of how variations in local resonance, parasitic resistance, and electromechanical coupling impact the waveguide's ability to refract incident elastic waves. Experimental demonstrations and advanced simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB Livelink are employed to quantify these uncertainties, offering valuable insights into the behavior of piezoelectric waveguides under varying conditions. The findings underscore the importance of considering parametric uncertainty in the development of smart materials, paving the way for improved manufacturability and operational robustness in future applications.
