Abstract

The article 'Understanding and improving artifact sharing in software engineering research' delves into the critical role of artifacts in software engineering research, including tools, benchmarks, data, and scripts. These artifacts facilitate the testing, validation, and replication of research claims, enhancing the transparency and reproducibility of studies. The publication examines the prevalence and availability of artifacts in recent software engineering publications, identifying various challenges faced by creators, users, and reviewers. Through a mixed-methods study, the authors uncover high-level challenges such as the effort required to create and maintain artifacts, lack of community standards, and technical issues. They use the Diffusion of Innovations framework to understand these challenges and provide targeted recommendations for improving artifact practices. The study underscores the need for clear documentation, standardized evaluation processes, and incentives for artifact creation and review. By addressing these issues, the research community can unlock the full potential of artifacts, fostering more robust and reproducible research.
