Abstract

This chapter delves into the impact of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on driver performance and road safety through a field operational test (FOT) conducted in Guwahati, India. The study focuses on the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems, evaluating their effectiveness in urban, rural, and hilly regions. Key findings include the reduction of longitudinal and lateral warnings in active mode compared to stealth mode, indicating improved safety with ADAS. The analysis of kinematic variables such as speed, acceleration, and response time reveals that drivers in active mode exhibit earlier braking and better lane discipline, reducing the risk of accidents. The study also highlights the variability in driver responses based on different road conditions and the potential for ADAS to enhance driving comfort and safety. The results underscore the critical role of ADAS in minimizing human error and improving overall traffic safety.
