Abstract

The article investigates the influence of CoAl2O4 inoculant additions on the microstructure of additively manufactured Inconel 718 processed via Selective Laser Melting. It aims to understand the grain refinement and anisotropy reduction achieved by varying the weight fraction of CoAl2O4 inoculant particles. The study includes experimental procedures, characterization of the microstructure, and discussion of the results in the context of process parameters and thermophysical properties. The findings reveal that while minor grain refinement is observed, increasing the inoculant content does not necessarily lead to a more equiaxed grain structure due to process-related issues and agglomeration of inoculant particles. The article also discusses the impact of nano-oxide dispersions on recrystallization and grain growth during post-process heat treatment, highlighting the potential for more aggressive heat treatments to improve microstructural control in additively manufactured Ni-base superalloys.
