Abstract

The chapter delves into the significance of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in capital market development and the potential for financial manipulation by firms. It discusses the motivations behind firms going public, the factors influencing investor decisions, and the reasons behind financial manipulation. The study uses the Beneish M Score model to analyze the financial manipulation behavior of Turkish firms before and after their IPOs, revealing interesting patterns and implications for auditors, authorities, and investors. The findings suggest that while firms may exhibit increased caution before IPOs due to legal responsibilities, they may also engage in earnings management post-IPO to maximize secondary public listing income. The research highlights the importance of enhanced auditing processes, especially during the lock-up period, and the role of corporate governance in reducing manipulation tendencies. The chapter concludes with practical implications and suggestions for future research, making it a valuable resource for understanding the nuances of financial manipulation in the context of IPOs.
