Abstract

The chapter delves into the complex ethnic landscape of Southern Ukraine, highlighting the historical dynamics and political narratives that have shaped the region. It examines the concept of 'Novorossiya' and its role in Russian imperial and neo-imperial narratives, as well as the Ukrainian response to these narratives. The text explores the impact of Russian and Ukrainian historical memory politics on national minorities, focusing on groups such as the Crimean Tatars, Bulgarians, Greeks, and others. It also discusses the role of local narratives in preserving cultural diversity and the challenges faced by minorities in the context of ongoing conflicts and political changes. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and systematic integration of minority narratives into the national grand narrative of Ukraine.
