Abstract

This chapter delves into the often-overlooked potential of youth associated with non-state armed groups (YANSAG) in peacebuilding efforts, with a focus on case studies from Indonesia and the Philippines. The text explores the lived experiences, reintegration challenges, and unique contributions that YANSAG can make to peacebuilding. It challenges the dominant narrative that views YANSAG primarily as security threats, instead highlighting their potential as agents of transformation. The chapter also discusses the structural and social barriers that hinder their reintegration and offers policy recommendations for empowering YANSAG. Through comparative analysis, the text provides insights into how YANSAG can be integrated into broader peacebuilding frameworks, emphasizing the importance of context-specific, dignity-affirming strategies. The findings suggest that YANSAG, when given the opportunity, can contribute significantly to peacebuilding and social cohesion, breaking cycles of violence and marginalization.
