Abstract

“If we don’t see each other in this world, we will meet in Bielefeld.” I was involved in the founding of the Bielefeld University, which now ranks among the Top 20 young universities in the world. That is where I received my first professorship. We had excellent students. For three years, I led the largest German management training institute situated in a medieval castle and was able to establish a first-class network of top managers. During my university years, I conducted internationally recognized research and laid the foundation for our management consultancy.

In German, USW stands for “UniversitaetsSeminar der Wirtschaft” (University Seminars of Business). In English, I use the denomination German Management Institute. After the German Reunification, the USW became the executive education department of the newly-founded European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin. In 2018, it was fully merged with ESMT and the USW logo was retired.

Teaching at the University of Mainz ceased during the turmoil of the French Revolution and did not resume until 1946, when the university was reconstituted under the name of Johannes Gutenberg. Cologne and Trier—two other major universities established in the Middle Ages by Archbishop or Papal decree—suffered a similar fate.

The German system has two boards, the executive board (“Vorstand” in German) and the supervisory board (non-executive directors). In the supervisory board meetings, the members of the Vorstand usually participate but have no voting rights. For companies with more than 2000 employees, both the shareholders and the trade unions name an equal number of board members. This system is called co-determination (“Mitbestimmung” in German). In case of a tie between shareholder representatives and union representatives, the chairperson of the supervisory board has a double vote. The chairperson always comes from the shareholder side.
