Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate processes of microplastic transport in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, focusing on advection by background currents, wind-induced drag, wave action, and vertical transport. The study employs the TELEMAC-3D model to simulate hydrodynamic conditions over a vast domain, from urban centres to the Atlantic Ocean. Key findings include the model's ability to accurately predict water levels, velocities, and salinity profiles, validated against observational data. The results emphasize the model's effectiveness in replicating complex flow patterns and salinity gradients, providing valuable insights into microplastic movement. This research underscores the importance of high-resolution, large-scale models in understanding and mitigating the environmental impact of microplastics.
