Abstract

This chapter delves into the disparities in estimating probable maximum precipitation (PMP) using the moisture maximization method across Canada. It examines the linearity assumption between extreme precipitation and precipitable water, revealing significant uncertainties, particularly during the summer season. The study also investigates the long-term trends in seasonal maximum precipitable water, challenging the stationarity assumption commonly made in PMP estimation. Additionally, it explores the relationship between extreme precipitation and various atmospheric variables, such as convective available potential energy (CAPE), vertically integrated moisture divergence (VIMD), and vertical wind velocity (VV). The findings underscore the importance of incorporating these variables into the PMP estimation process to enhance accuracy and reliability. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for future studies to critically evaluate and refine the moisture maximization-based PMP estimation procedures, considering the complexities and uncertainties involved.
