Abstract

This study delves into the factors impacting social media reshare behavior, particularly in the context of racism discourse. It identifies perceived emotion and popularity as key heuristic cues that influence users' sympathy and empathy, which in turn affect their intention to reshare content. The research also highlights the role of cognitive assessment and ethical beliefs in resharing behavior, providing a comprehensive model that explains the complex interplay between these factors. The study's findings reveal that both perceived emotion in racism-related posts and content popularity significantly influence users' sympathy, which sequentially leads to empathy. Empathy, in turn, positively impacts reshare assessment, which is linked to responsibility to reshare and reshare intention. The research underscores the importance of understanding the socio-psychological factors that drive resharing behaviors, offering valuable insights for practitioners aiming to promote responsible information sharing and deter the dissemination of hateful content on social media platforms.
