Abstract

This study delves into the genetic diversity of Striga hermonthica in Ethiopia, focusing on its impact on sorghum varieties. The research evaluates the genetic variation of seven improved Striga-resistant sorghum varieties in response to five distinct Ethiopian Striga ecotypes, highlighting significant variations in virulence levels. The study reveals that certain Striga ecotypes exhibit higher virulence to some sorghum varieties but lower to others, emphasizing the importance of ecotypes in determining varietal selection for Striga resistance. The interaction effects between Striga ecotypes and sorghum varieties are significant, illustrating the complexity of Striga's virulence and the need for targeted breeding strategies. The research identifies varieties N-13 and SRN39 as consistently resistant across multiple ecotypes, suggesting their potential for gene pyramiding to enhance Striga resistance. The study concludes that understanding the genetic variability of Ethiopian Striga ecotypes and resistance mechanisms is crucial for developing high-yielding and durable Striga-resistant varieties, ultimately benefiting farmers in Striga-affected regions.
