Abstract

Unmarried motherhood in our society is looked upon as a violation of a cultural norm. An unwed mother is a girl or woman who is not officially married to a man with whom she has conceived a child. Kerala, portrayed as progressive state with “empowered women” sits with its distressing alarming rates of gender issues, along with more than 2000 unwed mothers. The tribal belts of Wayanad, Palakkad and Kasargod districts are home to hundreds of unwed mothers living in abject penury and destitution. Similarly, a number of unwed mothers are also seen in authorized licensed homes (Jose et al. Soc. Sci. 73(1), 2009). Although a few, the existing literature states that illegitimate pregnancy is on a sharp increase, which would have a direct effect on the existing family system. The research tries to identify the psychosocial concerns primarily in connection with the mental health of the unwed mothers of Kerala. This research paper tries to put forth a framework for the policymakers and the government authorities to improve the mental health of the unwed mothers.
