Abstract

The article delves into the innovative use of shear wave velocity for foundation design, highlighting the advantages of in-situ measurements over laboratory tests. It discusses various methods for measuring shear wave velocity, including surface waves, boreholes, and soundings. The article also explores empirical correlations between shear wave velocity and other geotechnical parameters, such as SPT and CPT data, and how these correlations can be used to estimate design parameters for shallow and deep foundations. The approach is validated through case studies of published load tests on shallow footings and pile load tests in soft calcareous rocks. The article emphasizes the importance of considering the in-situ stress state and soil compressibility when estimating shear wave velocity. Additionally, it provides insights into the relationships between shear wave velocity and soil stiffness, strength, and rock properties, making it a comprehensive resource for professionals seeking to enhance the accuracy and reliability of foundation design.
