Abstract

The article discusses the challenge of controlling overhead cranes with hoisting mechanisms due to their nonlinear dynamics and underactuation. It introduces a robust mu-synthesis based controller designed to mitigate the effects of uncertainties and external disturbances. The controller is designed using a linearized model and applied to the original nonlinear system, showing excellent performance in simulations. The proposed controller is compared with other robust controllers, such as sliding mode controllers, and demonstrates better performance with less control effort and simpler sensor requirements. The article also highlights the controller's robustness against parametric uncertainties and various external disturbances.
