Abstract

The study focuses on using photographic mark-recapture (PMR) to estimate population size, movement, and lifespan of the reintroduced chequered skipper butterfly (Carterocephalus palaemon). PMR is compared to the traditional mark-release-recapture (MRR) method, highlighting its non-invasive nature and potential for minimizing habitat disturbance. The article discusses the ecology of C. palaemon at Fineshade Wood and the implications of PMR-derived data on population size, individual butterfly movements, and lifespan. It also explores the potential of algorithm-based deep-learning PMR for estimating abundance, lifespan, and movement in rare and endangered butterfly species.
