Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate balance between utility and usability in subgroup discovery problems within the domain of data science. It introduces the SD-CEDI algorithm, which identifies high-quality subgroups but often results in complex patterns. To address this, the authors propose three simplification strategies—merging, deleting, and rounding—to enhance the usability of these patterns. The experimental results highlight the trade-offs between utility and usability, demonstrating that while simplification can lead to some loss in quality, it significantly improves the interpretability of the patterns. The chapter also discusses the potential of combining these strategies to achieve a better balance, making it a valuable resource for practitioners seeking to enhance the practical application of subgroup discovery.
