Abstract

The escalating global energy consumption and the consequent environmental impacts have underscored the urgent need for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Among the various renewable options, bioenergy stands out due to its abundance and wide distribution. This article focuses on the utilization of Lantana camara, an invasive and hepatotoxic plant species, as a feedstock for producing hydrogen-rich producer gas through gasification. The study delves into the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the gasification process, providing a detailed analysis of the factors influencing the yield and composition of the produced gas. It also discusses the potential of gasification to address ecological challenges posed by Lantana camara, such as its invasive nature and contribution to forest fires. The article offers a comprehensive comparison of different gasifier types, including fluidized bed, entrained bed, updraft fixed bed, and downdraft fixed bed gasifiers, highlighting their operational characteristics and suitability for small-scale applications. Furthermore, it explores the potential of gasification to generate electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making it a promising solution for sustainable energy production and environmental management.
