Abstract

This chapter delves into the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for crime mapping to identify and analyze crime hotspots in the urban context of Kerala, specifically focusing on Trivandrum's Museum jurisdiction. The study employs various GIS methods, including point density estimation, choropleth mapping, kernel density mapping, and standard deviation ellipse analysis, to understand the geographical variation in crime locations over the past five years. By analyzing crime data from 2018 to 2022, the research identifies high-crime wards and vulnerable locations within the jurisdiction. The findings reveal that certain areas, such as Palayam and Nanthancode, exhibit higher concentrations of specific crimes like theft, hurt, and molestation, while others show a more dispersed pattern. The study also highlights the role of public spaces and residential zones in crime density. The results suggest that spatial planning strategies and enhanced police surveillance in identified hotspots could significantly improve urban safety. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for law enforcement and urban planners, offering a data-driven approach to crime prevention and urban management.
