Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of structural monitoring and damage control, presenting a groundbreaking method for identifying and localizing damages in multi-span beams. By building upon the well-established Rayleigh–Ritz technique, the proposed approach offers a robust alternative to traditional finite element methods. The study addresses the free vibration behavior of structures, utilizing natural frequencies and vibrational mode shapes to model damages as reductions in flexural rigidity. Through detailed numerical examples, the chapter demonstrates the method's accuracy and efficiency in detecting damage scenarios in both two-span beams and beam-column joints. The proposed technique's ability to handle various boundary conditions and interaction effects between structural components sets it apart from existing methods, making it a valuable contribution to the field of structural health monitoring.
