Abstract

The chapter delves into the application of synchrotron radiation for phase identification in magnesium alloys, particularly focusing on Mg-RE, Mg-Ca-O, Mg-Y-RE, and Mg-Nd-Zn systems. By employing in situ synchrotron radiation diffraction (SRXRD), the authors reveal the solidification sequences and phase transformations that occur during the cooling of these alloys. The results showcase the formation of metastable phases and provide experimental validation for thermodynamic databases. The study also highlights the importance of cooling rates in determining the final microstructure and the limitations of current thermodynamic simulations in predicting phase formation. The use of SRXRD offers a unique tool to observe non-equilibrium states during solidification, melting, and dissolution, bridging the gap between simulation and application in metallurgy.
