Abstract

The chapter 'Validating SAREF in a Smart Home Environment' delves into the practical application of the Smart Applications REFerence ontology (SAREF) within a smart home context. It begins by introducing the challenges of interoperability among smart devices and the need for a common ontology like SAREF. The authors then provide an in-depth examination of the SAREF ontology, its development, and related research. The core of the chapter focuses on two validation experiments: mapping data from 33 smart devices in a smart home to a knowledge graph using SAREF, and implementing a Knowledge Engine to test SAREF's ability to facilitate interoperability. These experiments not only demonstrate SAREF's capability to express data from various smart devices but also showcase its potential to enable meaningful communication between devices. The chapter concludes by highlighting the flexibility and practicality of SAREF, while also acknowledging the need for further research in more complex scenarios. This comprehensive exploration of SAREF's validation in a real-world setting offers valuable insights for professionals and researchers in the field of IoT and smart home technologies.
