Abstract

This chapter delves into the mineralogy and metallurgy of cobalt ores from the Central African Copperbelt, a region rich in sediment-hosted Cu-Co deposits. The primary ore minerals, hypogene carrollite and supergene heterogenite, along with cobaltoan dolomite, present unique challenges due to their variable compositions and structures. The text explores the traditional and evolving metallurgical processes, highlighting the inconsistencies in cobalt recovery and their underlying causes. It emphasizes the need for more detailed ore characterization and metallurgical testing tailored to cobalt, rather than relying on copper-focused methods. The chapter also discusses the geological factors contributing to these inconsistencies and proposes measures to enhance the predictability of cobalt processing. By distinguishing between different types of heterogenite and considering cobalt in ore typing decisions, the text suggests that overall predictability and efficiency in cobalt extraction can be significantly improved.
