The vestibular labyrinth in the inner ear can be likened to a six degree-of-freedom navigation transducer. The so-called semicircular canals operate as a triaxial angular rate sensor, thus perceiving rotations of the head about any axis. The so-called otolith organs operate similarly to a triaxial linear accelerometer, transducing linear acceleration, and therefore gravity. For example they provide the necessary information to determine where “up” and “down” is.
