Abstract

The article delves into the dynamics of violence against noncombatant civilians in revolutionary conflicts, presenting a psychosocial choice model that includes factors such as reference dependence and loss aversion. It posits that revolutionary intrastate conflicts pose an existential threat to incumbent leaders, leading to increased violence against civilians as a means to enhance military strength. The model is tested using data from 1960 to 2018, revealing that revolutionary conflicts are indeed more prone to substantial civilian violence compared to non-revolutionary conflicts. The findings have significant implications for understanding and mitigating civilian atrocities in conflict zones.
