Abstract

This study delves into the intricate relationship between the visual complexity and frequency of Amharic graphemes and their impact on grapheme identification and handwriting legibility in typically-developing children aged 7 to 9 years. The research underscores the significant influence of grapheme complexity on both orthographic learning and handwriting proficiency, with more complex graphemes posing greater challenges. Additionally, the study highlights the role of grapheme frequency in facilitating easier recognition and handwriting of more common graphemes. The findings suggest that the visual complexity of graphemes continues to negatively impact handwriting legibility even as children progress through grade levels. The study also explores the implications of these findings for children with dyslexia and dysgraphia, emphasizing the need for tailored instructional approaches. Furthermore, the research discusses the neural mechanisms underlying grapheme recognition and handwriting, providing insights into the cognitive processes involved. The study concludes with practical implications for educators and clinicians, suggesting adjustments in teaching sequences and interventions to better support literacy development in children.
