W state generation by adding independent single photons

Abstract

In this paper, we present a simple scheme for adding independent single photons to the existed W state one by one, and then the size of W state will be expanded. Only one CNOT operation and one discrimination operation are enough for expanding \(n\)-photon W state to \((n+1)\)-photon W state, with the success probability \((n+1)/2n\). No single photons will be detected, and no more entangled resources are necessary. If further operations are performed, the success probability can be increased as considered. Moreover, with \(m\) CNOT operations and one complicate discrimination process, \(m\)-independent single photons can be added simultaneously.
