Abstract

The 'Walk to Work' protest in Uganda, led by Dr. Kizza Besigye in 2011, aimed to compel the government to lower fuel and food prices. Initially a nonviolent act, it turned into an altercation with security forces when protesters became aggressive. The chapter evaluates the protest's nonviolent strategies, drawing on principles by Gene Sharp and Martin Luther King Jr., and identifies key factors that led to its failure. These include a shift in the protest's goal, lack of discipline among protesters, insufficient public speeches, and limited geographical spread. The chapter also highlights the importance of training and preparation in nonviolent action, offering valuable lessons for future protests. Despite its ultimate failure, the 'Walk to Work' protest provides a compelling case study of the challenges and opportunities in nonviolent resistance against authoritarian regimes.
