Abstract

The article investigates how local economic threats shape voting behavior, focusing on three distinct case studies: Democratic primary voting in Texas's 28th Congressional District, ballot initiative voting on marijuana legalization in California's Emerald Triangle, and vote switching in West Virginia's coal country. It argues that voters in economically dependent regions disproportionately support candidates or initiatives that align with their local industries, even if it contradicts their partisan affiliations. The study uses precinct-level vote data and industry-specific variables to test this hypothesis, revealing that voters' economic interests can override ideological or partisan preferences. The findings highlight the complexity of voting behavior in the context of local economic threats, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of economic voting.
