Abstract

The article investigates the water penetration in hardwood using NMR relaxometry, a technique that differentiates between bound and free water. It reveals that bound water in cell walls penetrates first, followed by fibers and vessels, challenging conventional capillary imbibition models. The study also shows that bound water transport controls the imbibition of other pore types, highlighting the critical role of bound water in wood's hygrothermal behavior. Experiments along different directions and with painted samples further elucidate the anisotropic nature of water transport in wood, providing valuable data for predicting water movement in wood structures.
