Abstract

This study delves into the critical issue of water pollution caused by tannery units in Dindigul, focusing on the contamination of groundwater and its implications for human health and the environment. The research examines key water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, conductivity, chloride levels, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), sulfates, nitrates, total dissolved solids (TDS), and hardness. The findings reveal alarmingly high levels of pollutants, particularly BOD, COD, and chlorides, which are directly linked to tannery effluents. The study also calculates the Water Quality Index (WQI) for different locations, highlighting areas with poor water quality that are unfit for consumption or irrigation. The research concludes that without proper treatment and disposal of tannery effluents, the quality of groundwater and surface water will continue to deteriorate. It suggests various treatment methods, including physico-chemical treatments, biological treatments, and advanced oxidation processes, to mitigate the pollution and improve water quality. The study provides a detailed analysis of the current state of water pollution in Dindigul and offers practical solutions for sustainable water management in industrial settings.
