Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of water resource vulnerability in the face of climate variability, with a detailed focus on the Opak Watershed in Indonesia. It begins by outlining the projected increases in temperatures and evapotranspiration, which directly impact the hydrological cycle and water availability. The study employs a multidimensional approach, considering physical, socioeconomic, environmental, institutional, and infrastructure aspects to assess vulnerability. This comprehensive method allows for a nuanced understanding of how climate variability affects water resources, highlighting the interconnectedness of various factors. The chapter also provides a thorough analysis of the Opak Watershed, discussing the unique challenges faced by its upstream, middle, and downstream regions. It reveals how urbanization, agricultural demands, and deforestation exacerbate the impacts of climate change, leading to increased risks of floods, droughts, and water scarcity. The use of GIS-based vulnerability index methods offers a spatial representation of these vulnerabilities, making it easier to identify high-risk areas and develop targeted adaptation strategies. The findings underscore the importance of integrated water resource management, emphasizing the need for reforestation, optimal land use, and disaster protection. This chapter serves as a crucial guide for understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate variability on water resources, providing actionable insights for sustainable water management practices.
