As the automation of vehicles continues to advance, legislation and jurisdiction are also facing new challenges. In our interview, we talked to legal expert Prof. Eric Hilgendorf from the University of Würzburg about some of the points of contention and possible solutions.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf (born 1960) holds the Chair of the Department of Criminal Law, Criminal Justice, Legal Theory, Information Law, and Computer Science Law at the University of Würzburg. In 2010, he founded the Forschungsstelle Robotrecht (Research Center Robot Law), which addresses legal issues related to autonomous systems in industrial processes, transportation, and private life. These include questions of civil and criminal liability, data protection, and approval for road use. He has been head of the pan-European legal research project called Adaptive, which is funded by the EU and which deals with the development of autonomous vehicles. Since 2014, Hilgendorf has been a member of the German Federal Ministry of Transport's Round Table on autonomous driving. In 2016, he was appointed as a member of the newly created Ethics Commission on Automated and Connected Driving. Since 2018, Hilgendorf has been a member of the European High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence.
