Wear and Corrosion Behavior of Graphene-Nanoplate-Reinforced Copper Matrix Composites Prepared Through Electrostatic Self-Assembly

Abstract

Synthesis of graphene nanoplates (GNPs)/copper (Cu) composites is one of the key challenges in the uniform dispersion of GNPs in the Cu matrix because of their density difference. In this work, GNPs/Cu composites are synthesized through electrostatic self-assembly and spark plasma sintering. The GNPs are uniformly dispersed in the Cu matrix. The graphene protective films are formed in the composites to protect the Cu matrix. The antifriction performance of the GNPs/Cu composites is investigated using a ball-on-disk apparatus. The corrosion resistance of the GNPs/Cu composites is estimated using potentiodynamic polarization curves. Wear and corrosion mechanisms are analyzed through scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The antifriction performance and corrosion resistance of the composites can be significantly improved by adding GNPs.
