Wear Behavior of Silicon-Cobalt Composite Coating Deposited on TiAl Alloy by Pack Cementation Process

Abstract

Si-Co composite coating was deposited on a TiAl alloy by pack cementation process to improve the anti-wear properties of the alloy. The structure and wear behavior of the coating were investigated using GCr15 and Al2O3 as the counterparts under different wear loads and sliding velocities. The results show that the obtained Si-Co composite coating has a multi-layer structure: a TiSi2 outer layer with a small amount of CoSi2 precipitates, a TiSi middle layer, and a Ti5Si4 + Ti5Si3 mixed inner layer. The coating exhibits much higher micro-hardness than the substrate, and gradually decreases from the surface to the interior. Wear tests determine that the Si-Co composite coating has a specific friction-reduction effect, and effectively enhances the wear resistance of the TiAl substrate when wearing against GCr15 and Al2O3 balls under the employed loads and velocities, as the coating presents much lower average friction coefficients and wear rates than the TiAl substrate.
