Abstract

The article investigates the effect of stabilizer arrangement on hole cleaning in drilling operations, focusing on the experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. It highlights the critical parameters affecting hole cleaning, such as well inclination, mud flow rate, and stabilizer design. The study uses a custom-built experimental flow loop and CFD simulations with FLUENT software to evaluate the performance of stabilizers at different positions and inclination angles. The results demonstrate that stabilizers significantly improve hole cleaning, particularly at critical inclination angles like 30 and 55 degrees, and that the position of the stabilizer relative to the bit plays a crucial role in cleaning efficiency. The article also compares the effectiveness of near-bit and far-from-bit stabilizer positions, providing valuable insights into optimizing drilling operations.
