Zusammenfassung

Werner Hildenbrand kommt in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren eine wichtige Schlüsselstellung zu, weil es ihm gelingt, Mathematiker und Ökonomen zusammenzubringen. Zunächst studiert er Mathematik bei Klaus Krickeberg und Gottfried Köthe in Heidelberg. Durch einen Zufall nimmt er am Ersten Weltkongress der „Econometric Society“ 1965 in Rom teil und hört dort einen Vortrag von Gérard Debreu, der zusammen mit Kenneth Arrow das einflussreiche Arrow-Debreu Gleichgewichtsmodell entwickelt hat. Der Vortrag weckt sein Interesse und er bewirbt sich bei Debreu, Professor an der University of California Berkeley, um eine Stelle und wird angenommen. Es beginnt eine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Debreu. Sie besteht auch fort, als Hildenbrand an die Universität Bonn berufen wird. Am Institut für Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften macht er die Mathematisierung in der Ökonomie zu einem Schwerpunkt für Forschung und Lehre.
