In a recent article, Vásquez‑Ibarra et al. (2023) aim to identify the “key factors that contribute to the eco‑efficiency level” for a certain product (honey). In doing so, they rely on the ratio-definition of eco-efficiency, given by the following:
$$EI=\frac{\mathrm{profit}}{\mathrm{environmental \;impact}}$$

where \(EI\) is the eco-efficiency indicator. We note that, although this, or similar, ratio-based definitions frequently occur in the theoretical literature (Huppes and Ishikawa 2007), most practical implementations employ the sum-based form that was introduced by BASF (Saling et al. 2002). We refer to the analysis by Heijungs (2022) for a critical analysis. Vásquez‑Ibarra et al. (2023) are to be lauded that they do what they preach: their Figure 4 presents indeed a ratio-based eco-efficiency indicator. …
