Abstract

The chapter explores the concept of democracy through the eyes of Plato, Robert Dahl, and Joseph Schumpeter, each offering unique perspectives. Plato views democracy as rule by the poor majority, while Dahl emphasizes political equality and equal control over the agenda. Schumpeter, on the other hand, sees democracy as a method for choosing between competing elites. The text also discusses the tension between the ideal and reality of democracy, and how this dynamic drives political progress. It concludes that democracy is an unfinished project, constantly reinterpreted and practiced under new historical circumstances.
