Abstract

The article delves into the historical evolution of the British Parliament, focusing on its transformation from an elite club culture to a public event. It argues that the Parliament's role in fostering collective solidarity was crucial, particularly through the interplay of club sociability and public performance. The study examines how the Parliament's relationship with the press during the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century shifted the dynamics of political culture, creating a sense of collective intimacy among the public. By blending historical analysis with sociological theories on sociability and performance, the article offers a fresh perspective on the development of modern political institutions and their impact on national identity.
