Abstract

This chapter examines the sublimation of sex in the series Ripley and its connection to the show's approach to morality. It argues that Ripley's non-sexuality, or asexuality, is a deliberate choice that sets him apart from previous adaptations. The text explores how this non-sexuality affects the quality of empathy generated by the series and discusses the ethical implications of this portrayal. It also delves into the series' commitment to gender and sexual fluidity, and how this clears the way for a class analysis that is the mainspring of any empathy spectators may feel for Ripley. The chapter concludes by discussing the series' return to Highsmith's class analysis, intensifying it relative to previous adaptations.
